The End of The New Order
8B-2
Ever since the G30S (30th September movement) incident, the old order was belittled because the citizens thought that the safety and the government aren’t firm, and that the country isn’t secure enou
gh. Soeharto created the New Order so that the country can have a fresh new start and move on from the incident. He also made sure that the police officers and the armies are firmer in doing their jobs, and made sure that the citizens felt secure, since he made it first priority.
He also made sure that the police officers and the armies are firmer in doing their jobs, and made sure that the citizens felt secure, since he made it first priority. The impact of the end of The New Order is that the increase of pricing, such as gasolines and food from the markets. At Medan, Bandung, and Jogja, the citizens faced higher price of gasoline. The price got higher by 71% for gasoline. Because of this, there was a riot at Medan, causing six people to die. For money crisis, at that time, 1 american dollar equals to 17.000 Rupiah. The money crisis happened on 22nd January, 1998, the beginning of the crisis.
Indonesia became a very poor country that we have so many debt to other countries. They did a huge demonstration as well to protest. The demonstrations keep happening, now taking over most countries in Indonesia. At the time of the demonstration take over, Soeharto was at Cairo, Egypt. He announced his resignation while at Cairo.
The cause of the end of The New Order is because, back in 1997, Indonesia was facing a huge crisis in the economic section. The main cause that The New Order ended is because Soeharto, the president at that time, resigned himself on 21 May, 1998. He felt that he had ruled Indonesia for too long, which is true, since he ruled for 3 decades.
Before he resigned, college students were doing demonstrations everywhere because they want him to resign. The citizens wanted him to resign because as he gets older, the country seems to be getting more and more poor, and it’s because of corruption. The most remembered demonstration was the demonstration of Trisakti college students on the 12th of May, with four students dying because of wild bullets. The only bullets allowed were actually plastic bullets which aren't as harmful as real bullets. The four students are Elang Mulya, Hery Hertanto, Hendriawan Lesmana, and Hafidhin Royan. The were remembered as Reformation Hero’s and was given big sympathy from other people. Ever since then, Trisakti was looked up to, and the students were seen as superior and hero’s.
Amien Rais wanted to do a ceremony and prayer at Monas with the citizens, but the action was denied and was forced to be canceled
Because of the deaths of these four young students, the demonstration got even bigger. Somehow, it had fired up the citizens even more. The demonstration started to take over everywhere in Jakarta and because of that, the citizens lives were threatened because the buildings were on fire. On May the 14th, there was a huge riot at the MPR/DPR building. Students from different colleges became one with the citizens and invaded the building, trampling anything they can and sitting on the roof of the building. The demonstrations take place at Medan and Solo as well. On the 21st of May, 1998, Soeharto announced his resignation. He announced this on 09.00 AM. The next president of Indonesia was B.J Habibie, Soeharto’s vice president.
